Top cop

TT: Your reactions on being conferred the Presidentís Medal for distinguished service?

RK: I feel very honoured. It is a matter of great pride for me

How will your award help the police force?

If the team leader is motivated, his followers will automatically be motivated to give their best

What is the biggest constraint you face as DGP?

Acute shortage of manpower. Currently, there are over 70,000 vacancies across ranks in the police department

What have you done to tackle this?

We have framed transparent regulations to begin recruitments. If things go well, posts will be filled within seven to eight months

Is this the main reason behind the deteriorating law and order?

Law and order is under control. We are doing our best in spite of limitations. We never sit idle after receiving a complaint

But, incidents of murder, rape and abduction keep happening every day. Abducted persons are being killed despite ransoms being paid.

There is no guarantee that such stray incidents will never take place. We have always taken prompt action

What about rampant corruption within the police department?

Yes, we have often received complaints about people being forced to grease the palms of junior officers to secure passports and other such things. Recently, several policemen were taken to task

But, what about senior police officers charged with benami investments in real estate?

They are also facing probes. No one is above the law

What is new on the Naxalite front?

Our operations are on in full swing. Several dreaded Naxalites were either arrested or killed in the state during the past month. The situation is quite different from what prevailed three months ago

But, people have little faith in the police

People always have great expectations from the police (laughs) and doctors in hospitals because they go to them as a last resort. We are trying our best to earn their faith. I am also regularly interacting with people in remote areas through video-conferencing.
