‘Rape’ hush-up cuffs on teacher

Barrackpore, Aug. 24: The headmaster of the North 24-Parganas school was arrested last night for his purported role in suppressing the alleged rape of a visually challenged student in the compound in April this year.

The headmaster was also charged by Naihati police with trying to shield the accused, a Group D employee of the school.

“It has been claimed by the father of the girl that he was forced by the headmaster and the Group D employee to make the girl undergo an abortion,” said a police officer of Barrackpore commissionerate.

The teacher was produced in Barrackpore court today and remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody.

The Group D employee was arrested yesterday.

Sources said the girl underwent an abortion in the first week of August at a private nursing home in North 24-Parganas.

An inquiry has been ordered by the subdivisional officer of Barrackpore, Purnendu Majhi. “The director of mass education will conduct the inquiry in addition to the police investigation.”

The 15-year-old girl’s father, a farmer, had said he had not lodged a complaint earlier because “some associates” of the accused had threatened him. He also alleged that a local Trinamul activist and land broker had offered him Rs 11,000 to hush up the matter.

District Trinamul leaders have denied any link with the broker. Calls to the broker’s phone went unanswered yesterday.
