Jaitley’s Sunday date

Calcutta, Aug. 21: Union defence and finance minister Arun Jaitley will chair an interactive session with BJP leaders and celebrities in Calcutta on Sunday, the state unit said today.

On Sunday morning, Jaitley will visit Jangipur in Murshidabad with President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate a campus of the Gurgaon-based Management Development Institute. Pranab’s son Abhijit is the Congress MP of Jangipur.

This will be Jaitley’s maiden visit to Bengal as minister in the current NDA government.

On his return to Calcutta in the afternoon, Jaitley will speak at the interactive session of BJP functionaries, including celebrities and intellectuals, at the Purbanchal Vidya Mandir auditorium in Kankurgachhi at 4pm.

“Barry O’Brien, who recently joined our party, will be present at the session to be chaired by Jaitleyji,” state BJP president Rahul Sinha said this afternoon.

Besides Bengal MPs Babul Supriyo and S.S. Ahluwalia, all candidates who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls, such as actors George Baker and Joy Banerjee, will attend the session.

Bengal BJP leaders said a report on the party’s preparedness for next year’s elections to 80 civic bodes, including the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, and the 2016 Assembly polls, would be submitted to Jaitley.

“We are looking forward to hearing Jaitleyji’s views on how we should combat the elections in Bengal in the next two years,” Sinha said.
