Film on Indira

The Congress is anguished by the impending release of a film on Indira Gandhi’s assassins but has decided to show restraint even as the Punjab Youth Congress has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an immediate ban.

Though the director and the producer claim they haven’t glorified the killers — Indira’s bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh — and that the script is factual, the name of the film, Kaum De Heere (diamonds of the community), has ignited a controversy.

Asked about the film, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said on Tuesday: “Indira Gandhi was not only a Congress leader but the Prime Minister of India and anything that glorifies her assassins has to be condemned by everybody. But it is for the agencies that deal with such issues and the governments to decide whether such a film should be shown.”
