Guwahati, Aug. 18: Sunrise Athletic Club held defending champions Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club to a 1-1 draw in their match of the RG Baruah Guwahati Sports Association Super Division Football League at the first turf of Nehru Stadium here today.
In a keen contest, it was the railmen who took the lead but failed to hold on to it for long although Sunrise Athletic Club’s failure to convert their 80th-minute penalty denied them their first win in the league.
With the sides carrying forward one point each from this match, NF Railway have tallied five points while Sunrise have two points from their three matches so far.
The railmen dominated the proceedings right from the start, although they failed to find their desired result in the first half.
Sunrise players failed to produce anything special as their few attempts to make inroads into the NF Railway territory, too, failed owing to the railmen keeping a compact defence line.
Playmaker Sibra Narzary, making his way from the left flank, provided Bipul Khanikar with a fine cross, which was well utilised by the latter in the 58th minute. On having found the ball in a favourable position inside the box, Khanikar took his time before placing the ball into the net leaving the Sunrise glovesman with no chance.
Being supplied with a long pass from the midfield, Tali Angom’s lobbed pass to Rahul Chaudhary finally paved the way for Sunrise’s equaliser in the 73rd minute. Chaudhary made no mistake in getting the ball past the NF Railway glovesman N.I. Singh to draw parity for his side.
With Sunrise being awarded a penalty after NF Railway defender Rajib Boro’s handling the ball inside the box, Bishal Harizan, who took the set piece, only managed to hit the woodwork, thus denying his side a chance of ending the match on a winning note in the 80th minute.
In the Jibeswar Goswami GSA A Division Football League at ground two, Gauhati Town Club kept up their consistent show by registering a 3-1 victory over Assam Police Blues.
Skipper Sanjeeva Rongpi ensured his brace with goals in the second and 25th minute while Festus O. Johnavah found the back of the net in the 59th minute.
N. Bikash Singh scored the lone goal in the 31st minute for Assam Police Blues.
