Ashim shines in 3-1 victory

Calcutta: Ashim Biswas netted a brace, while Basant Singh scored one as Mohammedan Sporting defeated Kalighat MS 3-1 in a Calcutta Football League championship round match, at the Barasat Stadium, on a rain sodden Thursday. For Kalighat MS, Saurav Mallick was the scorer.

Mohammedan Sporting took the lead in the 18th minute, when Ashim showed quicksilver opportunism and followed Basant’s free-kick on the far corner and tapped it home. In the 35th minute, Kalighat MS were rewarded for their persistence and Mallick headed home a delightful delivery from Bhim Oraon.

The second half, till 85th minute, was mainly about missed chances with both the teams losing the plot in front of the goal.

And five minutes before close, Mohammedan Sporting got their second when Lal Daniela’s centre from the right found an unmarked Basant, whose header hit the back of the net. Mohammedan Sporting’s insurance goal came in the injury-time. Ashim was freed on the left by Imran Khan and the striker exquisitely curled it into the near post, leaving rival goalkeeper Suvam Sen hardly a chance to move.

This was Mohammedan Sporting’s second win in as many matches. Ashim failed to recollect when was the last time he scored a brace. “Even I do not remember. I dedicate this goal to my daughter Anwesha who turned six recently. She is my source of strength,” the Man of the Match said.
