HNLC invites youths

Shillong, Aug. 14: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today invited youths to join the outfit, while appealing to a section of youngsters to stop misusing the outfit’s name.

On its 27th raising day, HNLC “general secretary” Cherishstarfield Thangkhiew, while asking youths to abstain from misusing the outfit’s name, openly invited them to join the group. The HNLC, which has been demanding sovereignty, was formed on August 14, 1987.

“There are several young boys and girls who are whiling (away) their time even though they are educated because the government cannot provide them with jobs. The state leaders are busy only in amassing wealth,” Thangkhiew said in a statement.

While stating that a section of youths have been misusing the outfit’s name to mint money, the HNLC leader alleged that even the government was arresting youths and implicating them as the outfit’s cadres.

“The HNLC understands the problems confronting the youths and it has something to offer to them. They should not misuse our name and we invite them to come forward with a clear mind to join the outfit,” Thangkhiew said.

Claiming that the outfit leaders have been able to get back several cadres, he said the HNLC would welcome youths irrespective of their financial status and educational qualification or whether they are from the urban or rural areas.

Thangkhiew also lambasted the government on issues relating to development, particularly in the rural areas.
