Re 1 tender trick

A man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly tampering with an online quotation submitted by his former employer and reducing it to Re 1 for the bid to supply cables to the railways.

Police said Debabrata Saha, 42, used his digital signature to access the quotation submitted by Crystal Cable Industries Limited months after he had left the organisation.

Saha was deputy manager (sales) for the Ganesh Chandra Avenue-based company.

“The company was in a fix when the e-tender by the railways was opened. It got the project for quoting Re 1, the lowest and absurdest bid. Crystal Cables realised the fraud and reported the matter to police,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, the joint commissioner of police.

The police established the link between Saha, who had resigned last August, and the online quotation. “The company had quoted Rs 1,339. Saha changed it to Re 1,” Ghosh said.

Saha was arrested from a Salt Lake office, his third job after leaving Crystal Cables.
