Yuki in squad

Yuki Bhambri

New Delhi: The selection of Indian team for the Davis Cup tie against mighty Serbia went the expected way, as a six-member squad including two reserves was picked on Wednesday.

While Yuki Bhambri, who missed the tie against Korea because of an injury, returned to the squad, singles star Somdev Dev Varman, doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni were the other three members. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Ramkumar Ramanathan would be the two reserves.

The World Group play-off tie will be played in Bangalore from September 12 to 14.

According to sources, the selection committee deliberated on the possible inclusion of Mahesh Bhupathi, but he was finally not included. “We did discuss about having Bhupathi in the squad… It would have been good to have a senior player like him in the team. But Bhupathi had not played a competitive match for a long time. It would not be right to take a risk in a tough tie like this,” he said.
