Biren Kundu dead

Cooch Behar, Aug. 12: Biren Kundu, the chairman of Cooch Behar municipality since 1995, passed away in a private nursing home in Delhi today.

He was 65 and is survived by his wife and son.

Kundu was elected to the civic body as a Congress councillor in 1995 and made the chairman. He was also the district president of the Congress.

On August 11, 2013, Kundu, along with six other Congress councillors, joined the Trinamul Congress. He was the working president of the party in the district at the time for the death.

Rabindranath Ghosh, the district president of Trinamul, said Kundu’s body was being flown to Bagdogra. “From there, his body would be brought here by road. It will be kept at the municipality office from 8am to 11 am tomorrow so that people can pay their last respects. With his untimely demise, we have lost an able organiser,” he said.

After 11am tomorrow, Kundu’s body would be taken for the last rites.

Shops, business establishments and schools in Cooch Behar town remained closed today as a mark of respect for the leader.
