Dibrugarh youths held for raping teen

Jorhat, Aug. 10: Police in Digrugarh district arrested three college students from Dibrugarh town for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl late last night and are searching for another accused in the case.

The arrested youths have been identified as Kailan Dutta, Karan Gogoi and Pranjit Dutta, while the police are looking out for another accomplice, Raju Gogoi.

The arrested trio are from Lahowal in Dibrugarh district while Raju is from Moranhat in neighbouring Sivasagar district.

A case has been registered at Dibrugarh police station under Section 376 (d) along with Section 7(II) of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act 2012 against the accused.

The police said the victim and her elder brother (hailing from Dibrugarh town) were going to Panitola in adjoining Tinsukia district and had alighted from an auto-rickshaw near the Banipur railway station to catch a train last night around 10pm yesterday.

The youths (three studying in 10-plus-two level with only one, Pranjit, in degree level) who had come out after “partying” in a rented house of one of them, attacked the brother of the girl and overpowered him and tied him to a tree and reportedly raped the girl nearby.

A police patrol party in a vehicle passing through the area found the victim and her brother and after knowing about the crime traced the youths nearby and arrested them, but one of them succeeding in running away from the area.

A police officer said a medical examination was conducted on the victim at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh today.
