Rape accused in judicial custody

Samrat Roy Chowdhury, the businessman who was arrested from his house in BA Block of Salt Lake on Tuesday evening for allegedly raping his minor help for months, was remanded in 14 daysí judicial custody by a Salt Lake court on Wednesday. The girl had lodged a complaint with Gosaba police station last month, alleging that her employer had raped her several times during her stay at his house. The girl also alleged that Chowdhury had threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the rape. She escaped from the house last month and went home to Gosaba in South 24-Parganas. Gosaba police later transferred the case to Bidhannagar North police station.

Man rescued

Boatmen rescued a 36-year-old man who tried to commit suicide by jumping off Howrah bridge on Tuesday evening. Police said Naiya Sahu, a van-rickshaw puller, jumped off the bridge at 5.30pm after a quarrel with his wife. Some boatmen saw Sahu jump and saved him. He was admitted to Howrah District Hospital.

Building collapse

A portion of the balcony and staircase of a two-storey building in Taltala collapsed on Wednesday. Police said the CMC had declared the Aga Mehdi Street building unsafe. The building was vacant.

Doctor assault

Himadri Sekhar Mandal, attending physician at a government hospital in Bishnupur, was allegedly assaulted by a mob after a patient died on Wednesday. The hospital authorities have lodged a complaint. Police said Abhijit Bhandari, 30, of Sherpur was brought to the hospital with abdominal pain on Tuesday night and died the next day.

Transit remand

The chief judicial magistrate of Barasat district court granted a three-day transit to Rishi Kumar of Madhubani, Bihar, who was arrested in Baguiati on Tuesday on the charge of abducting a minor. Kumar will be sent back on Thursday.
