Cousins held for rape

Two cousins, one of them a college student, were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping and threatening a college girl.

Tirthankar Maity, 23, and Sushanta, a student at a Dum Dum college, were picked up early on Wednesday from their Cossipore home following a complaint by the girl. Police said Tirthankar does odd jobs.

Police said the girl had mentioned in her complaint, handed over to Dum Dum police station by her father on Tuesday night, that Tirthankar had raped her several times over the past five years after developing friendship with her.

“After Sushanta came to know about this, he allegedly started raping her, too, by threatening disclosure to her family and friends,” said an officer.

The police, however, came to know while investigating the complaint that Tirthankar and the girl were in a relationship since the complainant was a Class VII student.

“They had a common friend and went to the same tutor. Tirthankar and the complainant came close to each other at the tuition class,” said an officer.

According to the police, the duo would often meet at the Girish Park house of a relative of Tirthankar. Over the past year, Sushanta had allegedly been accompanying them to the house. “Tirthankar and the complainant broke up recently,” the officer said.

“We have slapped the duo with charges under IPC section 376 (rape), 493 (cohabitation caused by deceitfully inducing belief of lawful marriage) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation). They have been remanded in police custody,” said C. Sudhakar, deputy commissioner of police, Barrackpore.
