Bengal’s first woman chief justice sworn in

Manjula Chellur (left) took oath on Tuesday as the first woman chief justice of Calcutta High Court.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi administered the oath of office amid chaos and commotion that left a glass door of the chief justice’s courtroom damaged.

Lawyers jostled to enter the courtroom where the swearing-in — attended by chief minister Mamata Banerjee (right), Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee, former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir and judges of the Calcutta and Kerala high courts —was held.

“I have great respect for Bengal and I am happy and excited after getting the responsibility to serve the state, where the national anthem and Vande Mataram were composed,” Chief Justice Chellur said, adding that she admired Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s works.
