Cop inaction charge

Cooch Behar, Aug. 4: A 22-year-old homemaker, who was allegedly raped on July 28, submitted a complaint addressed to the district police chief today claiming police inaction against the accused.

The woman was accompanied by her husband and members of CPM women’s wing, Ganatantrik Mahila Samity.

The homemaker claimed that the accused, Sanjit Das, 25, was the son of Sudhangshu Das, an influential Trinamul leader. “My husband is a carpenter and he was away on work. I was sleeping with my three-year-old son and suddenly, I saw Sanjit in the room. He held a knife to my throat and threatened to kill me if I made noise. He raped me. As soon as he left, I cried out for help. My father-in-law, who was in a nearby hut, came out but could not catch him,” she said.

She said the next day her father-in-law raised the issue at a salishi meeting in the village. When Sanjit and his father did not turn up at the meeting, she filed an FIR on July 31.

Jaba Pal, the Cooch Behar branch secretary of Ganatantrik Nagarik Samity, said the police were shielding Sanjit for his Trinamul links. “The victim filed a complaint on July 31 but the police did not take action. Sudhangshu Das is an influential Trinamul leader and that is why the police remained silent,” she said.

The police said Sanjit was arrested on Monday evening and charged with rape.

Today, Cooch Behar police superintendent was not present in his office and the woman’s complaint was handed over to the deputy police chief.

When contacted on phone, additional police superintendent Deborshi Datta said the accused had been arrested. “The police arrested the accused today and he will be produced in court tomorrow. The complaint is being treated with all seriousness,” he said.

Trinamul leader Fazal Karim denied that the accused had anything to do with his party. “We do not know Sudhangsu Das or his son. They are not connected to our party in any way.”
