Tezpur, Aug. 4: United FC, Nagaland, stormed into the semi-finals of the 54th Sohanlal Dugar Shield football tournament thrashing Jail Road Club, Jorhat 5-1 in a quarter-final match at Polo Ground here today.

After a contesting start when the Jorhat men put up a tough fight, the Nagaland team gained a foothold in the 23rd minute with striker Rato converting a pass from fellow forward Salo for the first goal.

Salo increased the lead with another goal in a similar fashion off Rato’s pass in the 32nd minute.

Rato consolidated the lead with another goal, receiving a midfield pass from Salo in the very next minute.

Salo also completed his brace with a 44th-minute goal to make it 4-0 before half time.

In the second half, the Jorhat men took the field aggressively at first and reaped the yield through striker Hemanand Deuri in the 49th minute. However, conceding the goal, the Nagaland side strengthened their defence once again and made it a point not to give a breakthrough to the opponents any more.

The Jail Road Club men tried to bounce back in the later part of the second half and that gave the opponents the opportunity to strike a fifth goal through Mathung.

Assam Rifles will meet Jorhat Town Club in tomorrow’s pre-quarterfinal encounter.
