Guwahati, Aug. 4: Assam Police Blues and Maharana Athletic Club registered thumping victories in their respective matches of the Jibeswar Goswami Trophy Guwahati first division football league at Nehru Stadium here today.
While the policemen tamed Sports Authority of India (SAI) SC 5-0, Maharana humbled Rising XI 5-0 in the second turf.
The policemen gained an upper hand as early as the 14th minute through striker Karuna Goyary who made no mistake in capitalising on defence lapse on the part of the relatively inexperienced opponents.
Midfielder Lohit Taye doubled the lead in the 27th minute by placing a cross from Sarbananda Sonowal from the right flank.
Skipper M. Nganthoiba Singha consolidated the lead with another goal just two minutes later. Receiving a midfield pass from Manoj Boro, Singha managed to beat the opponent defence with ease to tap in the ball right from the top of the box.
Leading 3-0 into the second session, the policemen continued with their dominance and Manoj Boro pumped in another goal from inside the box off a Lohit Taye pass in the 56th minute.
Karuna Goyari made it 5-0 with the slow left footer from inside the penalty area to make a mockery of the SAI defence.
The SAI greenhorns made umpteenth forays into the police territory but the opponent defence barricade was simply strong enough for them to breach.
In the other match, Swarang Basumatary opened the floodgates for Maharana as early as the ninth minute.
Stopper Aran Goyary and medio N Surjit Singh enhanced the lead with a goal each in the 18th and 42nd minutes respectively.
Striker Biswamitra Basumatary further consolidated the lead with a 45th-minute goal to make it 4-0 before going to the lemon break.
Returning after the break, the Rising men tried to rise to the occasion but their efforts proved futile as the Maharana men pinned themselves onto the backfoot defending their castle foolproof.
Capitalising on the Rising men going allout in the last few minutes, Maharana substitute Bishnu Bahadur Rabha ruffled the net for the fifth goal for his side.
Rajbari Athletic Club will play Kamrupa FC in tomorrow’s match.
Assam State Electricity Board SC will meet Navajyoti Club in the opening match of the RG Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division League in the first turf tomorrow.
