Glasgow: High on confidence after the spirited showing against Australia, the Indian men’s hockey team would look to win outright against South Africa in their final group match here on Thursday. Even a draw will be enough to seal a semi-final spot in the 20th Commonwealth Games here.
Going into the crucial match, both India and South Africa have six points from two wins each, but the Sardar Singh-led side occupy the second position behind Australia in Group A on account of better goal difference.
Last edition’s silver medallist India have a goal difference of +4 as against South Africa’s 0.
Terry Walsh’s boys would be high on confidence, after they put up a valiant fight before going down 2-4 against mighty Australia, who had blanked them 0-8 in the final of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
While the forwards and midfielders have so far managed to impress in the tournament, it is the fragile backline which remains a cause for concern. Against Australia, India had conceded two soft goals on Tuesday, mainly because of defensive lapses. (PTI)
