Woman, baby killed in Sonitpur

Tezpur, July 30: A woman and her seven-month-old baby were killed by unidentified goons last night after she reportedly tried to resist a rape attempt at Maibong village near Bhalukpong, close to the Assam-Arunachal border.

Raimali Mushahari, 27, was hacked to death along with her infant outside her house under Chariduar police station in Sonitpur district, police said. The village is nearly 35km from here. The bodies were taken to Kanaklata civil hospital for post-mortem.

Maibong headman Diken Rava, said, “The men tried to rape her but she ran out of the house. The criminals hacked her to death, along with the infant. Their bodies bore injuries on their foreheads.”

Sonitpur superintendent of police Sanjukta Parasor told The Telegraph that the victim’s five-year-old boy said a man had entered their house and his mother ran away in fear. “We arrested one person, Faguna Basumatary, based on the child’s statement. We have sent the samples for forensic examination,” she said.

The village headman said the victim, a mother of three, stayed alone as her husband, Satish Mushahary, works as a labourer at Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh.

A case has been registered at Chariduar police station.
