2008 blast accused killed

Kokrajhar, July 27: An NDFB cadre, one of the main suspects in the 2008 serial blasts, was killed this evening in an encounter at Tekhabazar Haizaguri under Kachugaon police station in Kokrajhar district.

Police said S. Ulafat alias Uttam Swargoyary, hailing from Digpur in Baksa district, was killed by security forces around 4.30pm. Ulafat is wanted in connection with the 2008 serial blasts in Assam.

The accused belonged to the 13th batch of the NDFB and was said to be close to the outfit chairman Ranjan Daimary. “He was among the 19 persons chargesheeted by the CBI in the serial blasts case,” said a senior police officer.

A 7.65mm pistol, two grenades, four live ammunition, a magazine, three empty cartridges, two mobile handsets were recovered from him.

The CBI, in its chargesheet dated May 25, 2009, had accused Daimary of masterminding the blasts but he was later granted conditional bail.

In another incident, an IED planted in a Pulsar bike was recovered near a petrol pump in Srirampur in Gossaigaon subdivision of Kokrajhar district around 6.10pm.

The police said bomb experts later defused the IED. They suspect more IED may have been planted in the area and a search is on.
