Drive to celebrate friendship

Shillong, July 24: Pledge friendship with nature, and create a record.

That will be the endeavour on July 30, celebrated as the International Day of Friendship, as more than 7 lakh trees would be planted across the East Khasi Hills district.

“International Day of Friendship is celebrated throughout the world on July 30. Keeping this in mind, the theme of the plantation drive is to pledge friendship with nature and to pledge to make Meghalaya green,” East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said.

However, the trees would not be left forgotten. Goyal said a two-pronged approach would be adopted to maintain the trees. One aspect is a five-year financial sanction for annual maintenance, which will be funded and supervised by the department concerned with the active involvement of the community, which has given the land for plantation, and which would be responsible to maintain the plants for these years and beyond.

The other is a pact to be inked between the government and the community on various aspects of implementation of the maintenance component.
