Fire victims protest over power

Over 100 underground fire victims of Jharia staged a demonstration in front of Jharia Rehabilitation and Development Authority (JRDA) office on Wednesday to protest against installation of electric meters at their quarters.

The protesters, who have been rehabilitated in Jharia Vihar Colony of Belgarhia since May 2010, handed over a memorandum to resettlement and rehabilitation in-charge Gopal Ji, demanding BPL rates for power.

“We were promised sops like free power and jobs before we relocated to this colony,” said Ajay Paswan, a resident of Jharia Vihar Colony.

Gopal Ji, however, refused to remove the electricity meter. “Belgarhia falls under the urban area and hence we cannot provide the connection meant for BPL families,” he added.
