Toxic units to be shut

The National Green Tribunal’s eastern zonal court on Tuesday ordered closure of several industries on the city’s northern fringe if found operating without environmental permission or violating pollution norms.

The state pollution control board was directed to close polluting industries while Bidhannagar police were told to cooperate in executing the order which was issued in response to a PIL filed by environmentalist Subhas Datta.

The order affects three industries — Delta Fabrics Pvt Ltd, Unistar Galvanizers and Fabricators Ltd and ASG Biochem — and another 10 could come under its purview in the Ganganagar area of Madhyamgram Municipality.

“We are not aware of the order. We operate with requisite clearances,” said Anup Das, director, Delta Fabrics.

Datta said the court took note of reports about residents suffering since 2002 because of air and water pollution caused by the industries.

“About 6,000 people of Noakhal have been suffering for the past 12 years,” said Chinmoy Chanda, who is fighting against toxic factories.
