Parui ‘scapegoat’ cry in Trinamul ranks

Suri, July 17: Some of the accused Trinamul members named in the chargesheet related to the Sagar Ghosh murder case, in which Birbhum party president had been named in the FIR, today said they had been made “scapegoats” while “big leaders” had been spared.

The chargesheet, submitted to the Suri chief judicial magistrate’s court today, does not name Mondal and Birbhum zilla parishad sabhapati Bikash Roy Chowdhury, who too had figured in the FIR against 41 people filed by Sagar’s wife Shibani.

Trinamul leader Sheikh Mustafa, one of those named in the chargesheet, said he and the other seven chargesheeted persons were “innocent”.

“We were made scapegoats while the big leaders went scot free,” he said over phone.

Asked whether he meant Mondal and Roy Chowdhury, Mustafa parried the question. “I am speaking of all the big and middle-wrung leaders. The (Calcutta High Court-appointed) special investigation team nailed innocent people like me.”

Did he speak to Mondal after coming to know that his name was in the chargesheet? “He knows everything. Let us see what the party does for us,” Mustafa said.

Sagar had been shot dead four days after Mondal exhorted party workers to burn down the houses of Trinamul dissidents contesting last year’s panchayat polls as Independents and bomb police if they came to the rescue. Sagar’s son Hriday had entered the fray as an Independent after being denied a ticket by Trinamul.

“Eight of the 41 accused have been named in the chargesheet, which was submitted today to CJM Indranil Chatterjee by the special investigating team,” said Kuntal Chatterjee, the assistant public prosecutor of Suri court.

Repeated calls to Mondal’s phone went unanswered. Roy Chowdhury said: “I have not got the details of what happened in court today. So I will not make any comments.”

Two of the eight named in the chargesheet — Subrata Roy and Bhagirath Ghosh — are in judicial custody. One person is absconding and the remaining five are out on bail.

Court sources said the chargesheet mentioned that Roy and Ghosh had fired from improvised pistols at Sagar.

The others named in the chargesheet are Trinamul anchal committee presidents of Kasba and Sattor gram panchayat areas, Sheikh Yunus and Mustafa, Mustafa’s son Sheikh Asgar, Jaladhar Das, Jagannath Das and Priyo Mukherjee. Asgar is absconding.

The police took no action against Mondal despite two high court judges asking why no step was taken to bring to book the accused persons.

Yunus said those named in the FIR by Sagar’s family were “innocent”.

“But only eight of us have been framed by the SIT,” he added.

Told that Mondal was one of those named in the FIR, Yunus said: “The big leaders are also innocent but ground-level people like us were blamed.”
