Five rebels held in Garo hills

Tura, July 17: Meghalaya police today arrested five rebels of the A’chik Songna An’achakgipa Kotok (ASAK) from Soksan in the North Garo Hills today.

A team from the North Garo Hills and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos intercepted the militants, while they were on their way to Goalpara in Assam around 1.30am.

The police recovered Rs 1.4 lakh in cash, ASAK ID cards, mobile phones and incriminating documents from their possession.

The superintendent of police, North Garo Hills, Jerry Marak, said, “The militants have admitted that they were going towards the Assam border to purchase AK ammunition and a 9mm pistol.”

The militants have been identified as Doma Momin, alias John, Rakesh Marak alias Laket, Salbong M. Sangma, Thailand Marak alias Thaiol and Onimesh Sangma.
