Helpline probe

Police have put their helpline for taxi refusal, 1073, under investigation for asking a caller to “help himself” and report an incident of assault to Bhowanipore police station on Sunday night.

Call centre manager Indraneel Chakraborty and his friend Chandan Chatterjee were beaten up by a taxi driver and his friends on Sarat Bose Road after they refused to get off the car when the cabbie told them he wouldn’t go any further than Gol Park.

Chandan somehow managed to call 100, which directed him to dial 1073. When he called the second number, he was told to “somehow get out of the place and report the matter to Bhowanipore police station”.

“The case is rare. We have started a probe,” said deputy commissioner (traffic) of police V. Solomon Nesakumar on Tuesday. A police source said: “An inspector-rank officer will probe the allegations against the helpline. All the calls are recorded. We will find out the exact conversation.”
