Held for sheltering murder accused

Sishir Mukherjee, a Trinamul supporter, was arrested at Sealdah station on Monday for allegedly providing shelter to Shyamal Karmakar, the prime accused in the murder of anti-hooch crusader Sourav Chowdhury in Bamangachhi, North 24-Parganas.

“Sishir, who once lived in Bamangachhi, was aware that Shyamal had murdered Sourav. He allowed the accused to stay at his Beleghata house and accompanied him to Tarapith,” said an officer of Duttapukur police station, under whose jurisdiction Bamangachhi falls.

Shyamal and an alleged accomplice, Ratan Das, were arrested at Rampurhat station near Tarapith, in Birbhum district, on July 8.

“Sishir was planning to leave the city. He had come to Sealdah to catch a long-distance train. We are yet to know where he was heading for,” said the officer.

“The cellphones of Sishir and his associates were under the scanner. We came to know that he would come to Sealdah in the afternoon to catch a train while monitoring his conversations with his associates,” said the officer.

The police have claimed to have gathered clinching evidence against Sishir.

“We have collected the photocopy of his Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC) that he had produced to book a room at a Tarapith hotel. Shyamal had stayed in the room with Shishir and Ratan after leaving Calcutta following the murder,” said an officer probing the murder.

Shyamal had left Bamangachhi on July 5 morning soon after Sourav’s mutilated body was found beside the railway tracks near Barasat and went straight to Sishir’s house, said the police.
