Govt school triumph

Hailakandi, July 13: Government High School, Karimganj, emerged champions in the inter-school under-16 football tournament of Karimganj district.

In the final at Karimganj College ground, they defeated Pallymangal School 2-0 yesterday. Suhel Ahmed Tapadar scored the first goal in the 18th minute and the second goal came off Rohit Das in the 34th minute.

The prizes were given away by the deputy commissioner of Karimganj, Sanjiv Gohain Baruah, and additional superintendent of police, Navin Singh, among others.

In the semi-finals, Pallymangal tamed Netajinagar High School 5-0 while Government School defeated Ghoramarra High School 3-0.

Sishu Kalyan ME School emerged champions in the under-14 championship of the same district.

In the final at the Government School ground on Friday, they defeated Brahmansashan ME School by 3-0 goals.

Arm sports: The Assam Sports Association is going to field an armwrestling squad from Assam in the BR Ambedkar National Sports Championship to be held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi from October 7 to 10.

State level winners and runners-up have been asked to contact the Assam Sports Association to confirm their entries and book their respective railway tickets in advance.

Player of the year

Footballer Sumsangrela Halam was adjudged Player of the Year by India Club, Silchar. In a function on the club premises today, he was awarded Rs 5,000, along with a citation.

India Club honours a player of the club every year.
