Gulgulia rape case officer changed

Bokaro, July 12: A day after Rajya Sabha leaders, cutting across party lines, expressed concern over the alleged revenge rape of a minor girl of Gulgulia tribe on the order of a community “court” in Bokaro’s Gomia block, top district and police officers rushed to the village today and took speedy actions.

North Chotanagpur IG Laxman Singh, Bokaro deputy commissioner (DC) Uma Shankar Singh, superintendent of police Jitendra Singh, Bermo SDO Rahul Kumar Sinha and several others visited Swang, around 65km from Bokaro steel city, to conduct an on-spot inquiry and take stock of the circumstances that led to the heinous crime.

After speaking to the 11-year-old victim, who was released from hospital last evening, the team replaced the investigating officer of the case, Virendra Kumar Ram, with a lady officer, Prafullit Kujur. She has been asked to file the chargesheet at the earliest to facilitate a speedy trial.

The DC and the others also declared that they would donate one month’s salary to the victim and take help from NGOs to raise an immediate aid of Rs 2.50 lakh.

“We decided to contribute from our own pockets besides taking help from NGOs as there is no special provision for giving immediate financial assistance to rape victims. Seeing the girl’s plight and her living condition, we have decided to enrol her in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya where she will get free education and food,” Uma Shankar Singh said.

He also promised speedy trial and strict punishment against the guilty.

Later, speaking at a news conference, the North Chotanagpur IG said Ghoshal Pasi, the so-called head of Gulgulias who had ordered the rape of the girl as an act of punishment after her elder brother Harendra tried to molest a woman, was not the chief of the community.

“Ghoshal was neither elected nor nominated as the chief of Gulgulia community. Gulgulias don’t have elected panchayats. He ordered the rape because the girl’s brother had tried to molest his daughter. As an act of revenge, he asked his son-in-law Nakabandi Pasi to rape the girl,” Laxman Singh said.

Last Sunday, a drunken Harendra stumbled into Nakabandi’s home and tried to molest his sleeping wife. The woman’s screams caused Harendra to run away. The next day, the woman complained to her father Ghoshal, who directed Nakabandi to rape Harendra’s sister. The girl bled severely owing to the brutality of the crime and had to be hospitalised.

All three — Ghoshal, Nakabandi and Harendra — have been arrested.
