Extortion bid lands 2 in jail

The district police thwarted an extortion attempt by arresting two persons from Azadnagar in Mango on Thursday.

SSP Amol V. Homkar said Rafique Khan and Guljar Ahmed Ansari had demanded Rs 10 lakh from a Mango-based contractor.

“After receiving the extortion call, the contractor informed the police. We formed a team that first picked up Ansari from his house on Old Purulia Road on the basis of call records. Later, the contractor’s driver Rafique was also arrested,” said Homkar.

Working on a tip-off, the police rounded up Suresh Adhikari, who was planning to rob an Adityapur-based industrialist of his cash on the Marine drive in Kadma. Adhikari’s aide Bikas Das, however, managed to escape.

The SSP said the businessman was supposed to pay wages to his labourers, for which he was carrying Rs 12 lakh.
