Fakir (top) and Tulu

Two hawkers handed over to police a bag, containing gold ornaments worth more than Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10,000 in cash, which they found at Sonarpur station on Thursday.

Fakir Sardar, who sells ayurvedic drugs, and Tulu Bhattacharya, who hawks bottled water, had found the bag on a platform. After examining the contents they handed it over to the GRP.

Troilokya Das, 76, had left the bag containing ornaments of a Durga idol on the platform by mistake and boarded a train in the morning. The police found in the bag a diary, from which they got Dasís number.

ďDasís son Salil turned up at the GRP office and was given the bag. He offered Rs 500 each to the hawkers but they refused,Ē said an officer.
