New Delhi, July 6 (PTI): The Centre will not provide Kerala any assistance under the national highways programme if the state develops national highway stretches at widths of 30 metres instead of the stipulated 45 metres.

Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said this to Kerala BJP president V. Muraleedharan at their meeting here today.

Kerala wants to fast-track four-laning of 30m highways while avoiding the massive land acquisition necessary for roads 45m or 60m wide. The UPA government had agreed in principle to reduce the width of 829km of national highways being developed in Kerala from 45m to 30m.
