Chetri to skip ISL

Calcutta: Atletico de Kolkata will unveil the name of their coach and marquee player at a function at the state secretariat, on Monday.

While the city-based co-owners of the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise didn’t want to reveal the names, a source close to the franchise said the marquee player is currently playing for Atletico Madrid.

The source also said the coach is a former Atletico manager.

Another source said that one among Diego Godin, Koke, Raul Garcia, Juanfran and Gabi could be seen donning the Atletico de Kolkata jersey.

While Godin represented Uruguay in the World Cup, Koke and Juanfran were part of Spain’s squad. Raul Garcia and Gabi are regular Atletico starters.

“The franchise wanted to sign their marquee player from Atletico Madrid. Since the La Liga will be on during the ISL, the franchise needed to get the approval from Atletico officials to sign their player. Once Atletico de Kolkata got the green light, they immediately sent the documents to the ISL officials. The league officials didn’t take much time to give their nod,” said the source.

The franchise informed that chief minister Mamata Banerjee will reveal the names on Monday.

In another development, it was learnt Sunil Chetri would not be playing in the first edition of the league.

“Bengaluru FC have decided not to release their players. Also, India will be playing in the Asian Games. So Chetri will miss the action.”
