Car turns turtle

At 2.48am on Sunday, a Hyundai Verna was lying on its hood on an empty stretch of Belvedere Road in Alipore, with its headlights on and music blaring from the stereo.

The sight shocked those who passed by around that time, including two policemen. The cops were further confused as no one was inside and towed the car to Alipore police station, a few metres away.

In the morning, the police traced the owner of the car, Mohit Khatri, and arrested him. He has been charged with rash and negligent driving and causing damage to property worth more than Rs 50. As both charges were bailable, Khatri was granted bail.

The police said Khatri was heading towards Bhavani Bhavan from the direction of National Library when his car hit the footpath divider and turned turtle. Khatri and a friend, who was also travelling in the car, escaped with minor injuries and fled. “Khatri, a resident of Talbagan Lane off Park Circus, said he had got scared after the accident and came out through a window of the car,” said a senior officer of Alipore police station.
