A man in his late 30s, who was kidnapped on Tuesday by a trio he had allegedly duped of Rs 1 lakh by making false job promises, was rescued from East Midnapore on Thursday.
Officers of Jadavpur police station said Dipankar Banerjee, a resident of Regent Colony, was kidnapped by three men on Tuesday. Banerjee’s wife lodged a complaint on Wednesday, claiming to have received ransom calls demanding Rs 1.5 lakh.
She told the police that the calls were made from her husband’s mobile phone. The police tracked the calls to Khejuri in East Midnapore.
A team of officers from Jadavpur police station, along with their counterparts in Khejuri, conducted a raid in the Gopichak area of Khejuri and rescued Banerjee on Thursday morning. The accused — Gurupada Giri, Shyamal Krishna Giri and Biswanath Samanta — were arrested.
Banerjee told the police that he knew his kidnappers. He said he met the men on Tuesday and they offered him a cold drink, allegedly laced with sedatives. He was then taken to Khejuri in a bus.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Banerjee, who is at present unemployed, had taken Rs 1.5 lakh from the men.
“About four months ago, Banerjee had allegedly taken Rs 1.5 lakh from the three men, promising them jobs. We are investigating whether the kidnapping is related to that incident,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
