Malda girl wedding off

Malda, June 25: The wedding of a minor girl in a village on the outskirts of Malda was stopped by the local police and the administration of Old Malda today.

“Today, we got information of a minor getting married and sent our officers to the spot with the police. The family members initially claimed she is 18-years-old but later, when we checked her birth certificate, it was found that she is 15-years-old,” said Dulen Roy, the BDO of Old Malda block.

“The parents were immediately asked to stop the marriage. They looked disappointed but gave us in writing that they will not try to get their daughter married unless she turns 18,” said Roy.

A source said the girl was being married to a 22-year-old youth who was a daily labourer.
