Table tennis contest on cards

Jamshedpur, June 21: Paddlers, here is a chance to improve your rankings.

Table tennis talents from different age groups can gear up for the Jharkhand State Ranking Table Tennis Championship, which will be held in the steel city from June 27 to 29.

The three-day meet, which will be organised by East Singhbhum District Table Tennis Association at Badminton Training Centre near JRD Tata Sports Complex, is crucial as it provides participants a chance to use their skills and earn state rankings.

The championship will be held in boys’ and girls’ categories at cadet, sub-junior, junior and youth levels.

This apart, men’s and women’s singles will be organised.

“The championship will be treated as a ranking event and points will be awarded according to rules laid out by the Table Tennis Association of India,” said Ujjal Kumar Chatterjee, secretary of the district table tennis outfit.

He added that the paddlers would be ranked from the quarter finals.

This means a contestant has to reach the quarter finals to earn points and get ranked.

Entry fee for the event is Rs 30 per player and last date for registering is June 23.

Besides East Singhbhum, paddlers from Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro, West Singhbhum, Garhwa and Giridih will be competing.

Chatterjee added that Jamshedpur paddlers were in good shape, thanks to the recently concluded summer camp organised by Tata Steel sports department.

“Over 30 cadets of Tata Steel Table Tennis Training Centre honed their skills under veteran Pradip Roy. The advanced training during the camp is expected to stand our table tennis players in good stead in the upcoming tournament,” he said.
