Varsity hope for Bastar

New Delhi, June 16: Naxalite affected Bastar may soon have a central university dedicated to promoting higher education among tribals and the study of the language, culture and economy of the forest dwellers.

The HRD ministry is considering a proposal of the Chhattisgarh government to set up a tribal university in the conflict zone as part of measures to provide higher education opportunities for tribal youths, who are potential cadres for the Maoists.

The issue will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of higher education secretaries being conducted by the HRD ministry. At the meeting, the Centre is expected to sort out differences with the state government on land requirement for the university.

The state has identified 100 acres of land in Bastar for the purpose while the Union government wants at least 300 acres. The state has asked the Centre to waive the requirement as the additional land needed for the university needs the forest department’s clearance.
