Gold haul at airport

Siliguri, June 15: Two men from Delhi were arrested with gold weighing 1.522kg by customs officers at Bagdogra airport today.

Customs officers said the duo were travelling on a Druk Air flight bound for Paro from Bangkok via Bagdogra and the gold had been kept in their socks.

“As the two men deplaned in Bagdogra, we conducted the routine frisking. The gold, which we suspect they were smuggling out of Bangkok, was recovered and the two were taken into custody,” said a senior customs officer.

“The two are from Delhi and have been arrested under the Customs Act,” he added.

According to sources in the customs department, the seized gold is worth around Rs 40 lakh.

“We are interrogating the two men to obtain more information and to find out whether they are members of an organised gold smuggling racket. Both of them will be produced in the court tomorrow,” said the officer.
