Student leader arrested

Dhubri, June 12: Dhubri police arrested two persons, including the secretary of Gauripur Anchalik unit of the All Assam Minorities Students Union, Zakir Ali, from Gauripur last night for alleged involvement in an extortion network in Dhubri and Guwahati for quite a long time.

The gang members allegedly extorted huge amounts of money from a reputed person in Guwahati.

Dhubri police swung into action on the basis of information about such a network which was allegedly being run at the behest of Lal Bhanu alias Jinna of Dhubri district.

Apart from Zakir Ali, police also rounded up Moinul Haque of Phulkumari village, under Gauripur police station of Dhubri district and detained the driver, Monowar Ali, a police source said.

The source in Dhubri police said the main accused, Lal Bhanu, 42, used to once work in the house of J.N. Saikia, a resident of GS Road in Ganeshguri in Guwahati about 10 years ago. But after leaving that job, he had been blackmailing Saikia and in the past few years extorted several lakhs of rupees.

The racket, allegedly run by Lal Bhanu, is not only involved in blackmailing officials and affluent persons in the district and outside but is also found to be running many anti-social activities.

Dhubri deputy superintendent of police Dhirsingh Das, who busted this racket, said after getting information from Guwahati that a gang of blackmailers was coming in a car from Guwahati, he, along with the Dhubri crime detection team, raided the Matiabag area in Gauripur last night.

“We found Zakir Ali and Moinul Haque in the car and the driver, Monowar Ali. Another accomplice, Nesu, fled from there. We are looking for Lal Bhanu and Nesu. We have activated our network to arrest them,” Das said.

A police source said Rs 1.10 lakh was recovered from the accused in the car. Jakir, Moinul and Nesu went to Dudhnoi to collect the money from J.N. Saikia on behalf of Lal Bhanu. Saikia was supposed to give them Rs 2.5 lakh.

The police are also investigating as to why Saikia paid Lal Bhanu. Dhubri district unit AAMSU secretary Enamul Haque said Zakir Ali was expelled from the organisation today.
