New Delhi, June 12: A 36-year-old homemaker was gang-raped in a moving car by three men who pulled her into the vehicle while she was walking to a market in Delhi’s upscale Vasant Kunj area last night, police said.
The woman’s ordeal lasted nearly three hours during which she was first drugged and raped in the sedan and then assaulted at a secluded place again before being dumped in a deserted lane 3km away, the police said based on her complaint.
The incident revived memories of the December 2012 atrocity on a paramedical student who was gang-raped inside a moving bus and tortured undetected by police vans, leading to her death two weeks later. Several other cases of rape in moving vehicles in Delhi were reported later.
In the latest incident, suspects Jitendra alias Johny 38, Ajay, 28, and Jai Bhagwan, 29, have been arrested and booked for gang rape, the police said.
Jitendra and Jai Bhagwan were unemployed while Ajay worked as a driver for a rent-a-car firm that owned the Skoda in which the assault occurred, a senior officer said. The car has been seized.
Jitendra and Jai Bhagwan pulled the woman into the car when she was on way to the market around 10 last night, the victim said in her complaint.
“She alleged that they forced her to sniff something, after which she lost consciousness for a while. Later, Ajay joined the two. All three then raped her inside the vehicle before taking her to a secluded place where they sexually assaulted her again before dumping her in a lane,” said the officer.
The woman called 100, the police helpline, around 12.55am on Thursday, after which a team headed by a lady officer was sent to the spot. “Her ordeal lasted for nearly three hours,” the senior officer said.
Some of last night’s crime spots are not far from the south Delhi areas that the bus had passed through undetected in December 2012 while the student was being brutalised.
Today, the homemaker was sent for medical tests and the report confirmed rape, another officer said. “The accused are being questioned at Vasant Kunj police station,” the officer added.
