Accused in one, custody in another

Bolpur, June 11: Police have charged a BJP supporter for the murder of a BJP supporter.

Sheikh Mustakim Mollah had been named in an attempt to murder FIR lodged by a Birbhum Trinamul worker but the police tagged him in a murder case of another BJP supporter. Mustakim and four others were sent to seven days’ judicial custody today.

On June 7, BJP supporter Sheikh Rahim, 55, was hacked to death during a clash with Trinamul activists in Birbhum’s Illambazar. Rahim’s brother Nafizul Sheikh had lodged an FIR naming 36 Trinamul activists “and others”.

Bablu Sheikh, a Trinamul worker injured in the clash, had filed a counter-complaint against 43 people. Mustakim’s name was 15th on the list.

When investigating officer Anup Dutta produced the five persons arrested in connection with the clash, including Mustakim, in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate today, he named the BJP supporter as one of those accused in Rahim’s murder.

When BJP supporters told him outside the court that he had made a mistake, Dutta said he would look into it.

District police chief Alok Rajoria said: “We arrested Mustakim from the spot after the clash. He was later tagged to the murder case.”

Birbhum BJP vice-president Dilip Ghosh expressed surprise at the police’s move. “Mustakim had tried to save Rahim,” he said.

The police’s move has flummoxed Trinamul as well. Trinamul leader Jafarul Islam, who has been named in the murder FIR, said: “We cannot understand how he (Mustakim) was linked to the murder.”
