Shillong, June 9: Around 50 hydel and two thermal projects, which can collectively generate thousands of mega watts of power, have been identified in power-starved Meghalaya.
Replying during Question Hour in the state Assembly today on the second day of the re-assembled budget session, chief minister Mukul Sangma said three authorities have identified the hydel power projects.
Out of nine projects, which were identified by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), three have been commissioned while one is under construction. The commissioned projects include the 1.5MW Sonapani project in East Khasi Hills, 0.04MW Pashyiang project in East Khasi Hills and 0.02MW Umsaw project in Jaintia Hills.
The Lakroh project of 1.5MW in Jaintia Hills is still under construction while the identified projects, among others, include the Um-Mynrat in East Khasi Hills, Sabar in Jaintia Hills, Damring in East Garo Hills and Galwang in West Garo Hills. These nine projects can generate around 13.06MW of power.
Moreover, Sangma said of the 37 projects identified by the ministry of new and renewable energy, the detailed project reports of six have been completed while one is still under survey and investigation.
These 37 projects can jointly generate more than 8,000MW of power. They include the Um Shana project of 200MW in West Khasi Hills, Um Kanram-I project of 2,000MW in East Khasi Hills, Salan project of 160MW in East Garo Hills, and Umshangphu project of 300MW in Jaintia Hills.
Out of the four projects identified by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), the detailed project reports of three have been completed while one is under survey and investigation.
These four projects can collectively generate 2.78MW of power, and they include Risaw project of 0.08MW in East Khasi Hills, Tyrsaw project of 0.5MW in East Khasi Hills, Umran project of 0.2MW in Ri Bhoi district, and Sanglet project of 2MW in East Khasi Hills.
On thermal projects, the chief minister informed the House that two such projects are under process in the state. These include the 240MW thermal project at Era Aning village near Nangalbibra in South Garo Hills and the 500MW project at Darugiri in the East Garo Hills.
Both the projects are under survey and investigation, and preparation of the detailed project report is under way, he added.
Sangma said the detailed project reports would be completed in no time as the developers are taking keen interest in the projects.
