Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas: ‘Irreconcilable differences’
June 7: Their marriage was one of the longest in Hollywood, spanning nearly two decades.
But Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas have announced they are to separate after 18 years together.
It has been reported that Griffith, 56, has filed for divorce in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.
However, in a statement, the couple said the decision was “consensual”.
The statement said: “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost 20 years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honouring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together.”
Griffith has asked for sole physical but joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter Stella, it was reported.
It will be Griffith’s fourth divorce. She was twice married to Don Johnson, the actor. She has also been married to Steven Bauer, also an actor. Griffith and Banderas, 53, met in 1995 on the set of Two Much, the romantic comedy. They got married the following year.
It is Banderas’s second divorce. He was previously married to Ana Leza, an actress. There had been speculation in the media over the state of the couple’s marriage in recent months and in May, Griffith, who has a tattoo on her arm saying “Antonio”, asked her Twitter followers for their views on matrimony.
She posted to her hundreds of thousands of followers: “Who believes in marriage and why? Or why not?”
But in March she posted a picture of Banderas smiling on board a boat while on holiday in the Caribbean.
Banderas is best known for his role in 1998 film The Mask f Zorro.
More recently, he has been the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek films.
In 2010 Banderas told Hello magazine he repeatedly fell in love with Griffith, best known for her role in 1988 film, Working Girl.
“There are days that I’ve fallen in love with her many times over because of things that she’s done,” he told the magazine.
“For example, we have a real laugh taking photos.
“There have been times with our daughter that we couldn’t even take the picture because Melanie was cracking up.
“I’d look at her, so happy, so beautiful, so healthy, and for me it was a reaffirmation.”
Banderas has also starred with Angelina Jolie in Original Sin.
