Six more in RMC mayor poll fray

Political arch-rivals are known to bad-mouth each other. Trust two women to break the norm and set an example.

Competitors Asha Lakra and Varsha Gari — both vying for the Ranchi mayor’s post — hugged each other at Vikas Bhavan where the duo went to file their nomination papers on Tuesday afternoon. In good humour, the two women also wished each other the best for the poll slated on June 23.

Besides them, four others — Michael Ekka, Navin Lakra, Ajit Oraon and Madhuri Lakra — also filed their nomination papers taking the number of candidates in the mayoral fray to eight.

While BJP’s state general secretary and in-charge of the party’s women cell Lakra is a first-time contestant, Ajsu candidate Gari was a strong contender in last year’s mayoral poll, which was cancelled over a cash muddle involving then incumbent Rama Khalkho.

The BJP had announced its support for Lakra on Monday. Top sources said former chief minister Arjun Munda chose Lakra after a deliberation with state party chief and MP Ravindra Rai. Party heavyweights like former Assembly Speaker C.P. Singh, Gama Singh and Satyanarayan Singh accompanied Lakra to Vikas Bhavan on Tuesday.

No matter which party Lakra and Gari represent, the two women share the same poll plank. “Shahar ka vikas (city’s development),” was the reply in chorus when asked about their focus, if elected.

In a related development, four others collected nomination forms on Tuesday, taking the count from 18 to 22. Ajay Tirkey, Suresh Toppo, Sudama Khalkho and Rose Parvin Tirkey will have to submit the forms by 3pm on Wednesday.

“Tomorrow (June 4) is the last day to purchase nomination forms as well as submission. Candidates must be present on the premises before 3pm to file nominations. No one will be entertained after that,” said election officer Ravi Shankar Verma.
