‘Thrashed’ by teacher, boy dies

Burdwan, June 2: A nine-year-old boy allegedly beaten up by his private tutor in Burdwan’s Katwa died three days later on Saturday, prompting his mother to lodge a police complaint.

Aparna Hazra alleged that her son Atanu, a Class IV student, was severely beaten up by his teacher Srishti Hazra and had been vomiting blood since then.

The teacher, who had allegedly tried to settle the case by offering Rs 30,000 and 1.5 cottahs, is absconding.

“When my son returned from his tuition classes on May 27, he complained of severe backache. He told me that his teacher had beaten him up with a stick. He had been vomiting blood. We took him to a local quack who gave him some medicines,” said Aparna.

The boy was taken to Katwa subdivisional hospital on May 30 after his condition deteriorated. His died there.

District police chief S.M.H. Meerza said a case had been started against Shristi Hazra under Section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
