Bronze glory rolls in

- Jharkhand boys shine at national meet

Jamshedpur, May 31: Jharkhand boys claimed a bronze at the 8th Sub-junior National Roll Ball Championship held at Tapesia Sports Complex, Guwahati from May 23 to 25.

The girls’ outfit, however, could only advance till the quarter-final.

The boys started their campaign with a confident 10-1 win over Nagaland before defeating Uttarakhand 8-0 in the quarter-final to make it to the last four. Jharkhand lost to Uttar Pradesh 4-8 in the semi-finals. But they managed to beat Maharastra 10-7 to bag the third spot.

According to Jharkhand Roll Ball Association secretary Chandeshwar Kumar, the performance of the boys was satisfactory as they were up against some strong opponents. “The training camp at JRD Tata Sports Complex helped the boys iron out their flaws and yielded positive results. We are hopeful of an improved performance in the next edition of the national meet,” he added.

The 10-member boys’ outfit comprised Srikant Sahu, Subrata Gorai, Karan Sandhu, Nirbhay Gupta, P. Harshvardhan, Ajay Kumar, Dipanshu Kumar, B. Upendra, Deepanshu Choudhary and Monu Gupta.

Eighteen states participated in the boys’ section while 12 tried their luck in the eves’ category.

The state roll ball outfit has plans to spread wings in other districts of Jharkhand as well. “Roll ball has to be popularised. This can be done only when camps are conducted in other districts. Skating is an important component of the sport. Youngsters from the steel city are very inclined towards this sport. They come in good numbers to hone their skills at JRD Tata Sports Complex,” Kumar added.
