Junior doc ‘molested’ in SSKM OT

Calcutta, May 31: A Group D employee at SSKM Hospital allegedly molested a junior doctor in the gynaecology department’s operation theatre yesterday.

The accused, Shanti Majhi, ran out of the OT when the junior doctor raised the alarm and is yet to be traced.

Police said the complainant, a third-year MS student, had entered the OT to be part of a team of surgeons. The patient was yet to be wheeled in and Majhi was standing beside the junior doctor, arranging surgical equipment. The police said the junior doctor raised the alarm as soon as she was molested.

“Majhi ran out. Before the staff members outside the OT could realise what had happened, he had fled,” a hospital official said.

A police officer said Majhi and two other Group D employees were in the OT to assist the team of surgeons around 7.30pm.

Dipanjan Bandopadhyay, the medical superintendent of SSKM, said he had received a complaint from the junior doctor and forwarded it to the police. “We will decide on Monday what action will be taken against Majhi,” he said.

The police said documents relating to Group D employees were kept in the records room inside the hospital superintendent’s office.

“When we went there yesterday to find out Majhi’a house address, the room was locked. We could not enter the room today, either, as the superintendent had left by the time we arrived there,” an officer said.
