Family away, home burgled

A family returned from vacation on Thursday to find their home off Prince Anwar Shah Road burgled. Gold jewellery worth over Rs 3 lakh and around Rs 10,000 were allegedly missing.

Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, 54, who owns a hotel in Puri, had gone there with his family on May 13.

“When we returned on Thursday morning, the lock on the grille gate was gone. The hatch bolt on the main door was also missing and the entire house had been ransacked,” said Ghosh Chowdhury, who lives on the ground floor of the two-storey house with wife Shibani and son Sayan, 14.

The upper floor of the house in Rajendra Prasad Colony near the Lake Gardens flyover is occupied by relatives.

Ghosh Chowdhury said a small bag with some jewellery had been kept inside a divan. “We go on trips several times a year and we always leave jewellery there and lock the divan before leaving,” he said. This time, the family found the divan lock broken and cupboards in two bedrooms ransacked on their return.

According to a complaint lodged with Jadavpur police station, jewellery, cash, some utensils and expensive saris have been stolen.

“I had seen the lock intact on the grille gate even on Wednesday. We did not hear anything,” said one of the relatives living on the upper floor.

Some neighbours, however, said they had heard “dogs barking very loudly” on Wednesday night.

No one has been arrested in connection with the case, though some suspects have been detained.
