Two held for gunning down man

Police have arrested two alleged Trinamul Congress supporters for the murder of Satyendra Rai near APC Park at Kankurgachhi on Monday.

Rai owned a cowshed and supplied milk to tea stalls, restaurants and households.

One of the accused, Biswajit Kundu, 40, was arrested from his house on Tuesday night, while the other, Uttam Ghosh, in his late 30s, was arrested from Bhangar on Wednesday.

“Uttam, who owned the gun used in the crime, had fired while Biswajit and another person, Joydeb, were present at the spot. It seems the firing was accidental,” said the joint commissioner (crime), Pallab Kanti Ghosh.

Residents said hours before Satyendra was killed, he had been seen trying to pacify two groups, one loyal to the Trinamul and the other to the BJP, fighting over control of APC Park.

Sources at Lalbazar said police stations around Phoolbagan have been alerted about the possibility of political clashes.
